REFLECTION ON INFORMATION COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY

I just learned to use IT only after enrolling in the DE Program but after attending the ICT class this year, I felt it was an enriching experience for me. Although I know how ICT has reformed our lifestyle and how it has helped me in this 21st-century world but lack of interest and time constraint withheld me from learning. However, this year it is a golden opportunity for me as I could learn how to use ICT as an informative tool. It is ourselves who need to change our attitude towards learning. This time with the knowledge of ICT, I felt that I can do a lot to enhance my teaching in order to make a lively class.

ICT is very helpful and one of the “must to” learn knowledge in this twenty-first century. ICT is surly a knight in shining white armor in this growing modernized, world. I am not just saying this out of blue but from my experienced After joining DE and taking the course on ICT, I learned a lot about ICT and it is a pretty helpful tool to use not only in our teaching but also in our daily lives. After learning ICT and using ICT, it made my work a lot easier and a lot more efficient. I was able to do my duty efficiently and smartly. It not helped my students to understand the lesson but also made them interested in attending my class.

I have been using Google as a search engine so far but under the erudite ICT tutor, I learned beside google there are so many other search engines such as Ask, Lycos, Northern light, AltaVista, Dogpile and Metacrawler. The most important thing about the ICT module is to set up a blog where we can share our views and get an opinion from others in order to learn and enhance our learning. Before, when I hear about blogs, I wondered what they were and how it worked. After creating a blog and posting on it, I found it quite helpful to use blogs. It helps to get feedback, opinions from other fellow mates and helps us to put our idea in social media.

Then I stumbled upon simulation. I learned about simulation, learned how to make it and use it.
Now I have full confidence that I can make my teaching and learn more effective because I have learned simulations where I can develop very beautiful teaching-learning materials that can motivate students in learning better. I use it and is proving me helpful and useful every the time I use it.

I was also very fortune to have got the chance to learn about making video tutorials. Before when I saw other video tutorials, I wondered how they made it but now have learnt how to make video tutorials using Camtasia, it is very helpful especially when I am on leave due to some work, I could just make a video tutorial about tie lesson and give it to the substitute, they would show the tutorial to the students and the students can still learn even without my presence.
ICT is a very helpful tool and an aid to our teaching-learning. It helps us create a new curriculum and make our class interesting. It helps students to learn the lesson efficiently and effectively. So we should opt for ICT and use it in our daily life and in our profession to make it worth doing it.
Therefore, last but not least I would like to whole heartily thank my ICT tutor for teaching us how to use information communication and technology in our daily teaching and learning processes as I mentioned above. Thank you for teaching us patiently.

lesson through wechat

In this blog, I am going to share my past lesson with my students. Since I am teaching class PP maths only I could not integrate ICT with them. So I am sharing here what I did last year with my class VI students.

In school, homework is one of the things that students hate the most. Not all but most of them don’t like homework and always forget to do so. Even if they wanted to do it, they forget about it when they reach home. It is also one of the most challenging parts for the teachers too. Homework is a part of the curriculum and we teachers give our students homework so that they learn and study the lesson learned in the class at school hours but the students don’t want them.

It was challenging for me to make all my students do homework. I taught class 6, section ‘A’ & ‘B’, I gave them homework but they all always used to give a deaf ear to homework and didn’t do it. I tried various methods to make them do homework, I even went to the extent of beating them but nothing worked. I was at the verge of giving up on them, suddenly an idea clicked into my mind. Then in the PT-meeting I made a WeChat group with ID of my students’ parents. Then whenever I gave them homework, I reminded them through the WeChat group through their parents and made sure they all do their homework on time. After using that method which is a form of ICT, all of my students started doing their homework and homework completion rate was always 100% from that on.Moreover, when the examinations were nearing, I thought of giving my students to solve some of the past question papers as a revision and practice but the number of the student was too large. I possibly couldn’t give each of them a copy of the questions. So I clicked the picture of the question papers and sent it in the WeChat group. From there, the students copied the questions and would bring to the class and we would discuss and solve the questions. Due to that, we could revise the whole syllabus and my students performed incredibly better than other sections.
Using ICT to teach is a very helpful and reliable method of teaching in this fast-growing, developing the twenty-first century. We should all develop the habit of using ICT as an aid in our teaching, changing the age-old method of teaching and going with the time for the better of both our students and us.

ICT IN THE CLASSROOM

Nursery rhymes help children to develop language acquisition and help speech development. It helps to learn basic numeracy and counting forward and backward. So in one of my lesson in mathematic PP, I taught nursery rhyme in the topic ‘Counting to 10’. Children already learned numbers from one to five in the previous chapter. It was easy for me to teach numbers from six to ten. They can say the numbers from one to ten easily but it was very difficult to teach how to count number backward. There is one topic where children should be able to say the numbers backward from ten to one. So I taught one rhyme call “ Ten little monkeys jumping on the bed”. When I was teaching this rhyme it was very difficult to teach them the lyrics of the rhyme in sequence. So I downloaded the nursery rhyme from YouTube and showed to my children.

I divided the class into two groups and played rhymes to them with pictures as shown in the pictures below. Children were so excited to watch and sing the rhyme.

After watching many times they can sing the rhyme “Ten Little monkeys jumping on the bed” with correct lyrics. Since the rhyme starts with ten and goes backward (eg; ten, nine, eight ……..) children can also count the backward. They can now say the numbers backward from ten to one. ICT helps me to teach that rhyme and helps children to learn so quickly. I did it in the class itself by taking two laptops because it takes time to take small kids to the other room connected with projectors. We have only 40 minutes in one period so it's very difficult to control and take small kids to that room.

If we can use ICT daily with our lesson I am sure it will benefit our children in learning. On the other hand, it has disadvantages, example lack resources, meaning every class need projector individually with a computer which is impossible due to lack of budgets. We cannot take our children to other only room connected with projectors every period. It reduces our time from teaching periods.
Therefore, I wish in future our children get these facilities to use in the classrooms.

USE OF ICT IN CLASSROOM TEACHING.

I would like to share, how I taught my PP children using video tutorial made by myself to submit to our tutor. I don’t know how good or bad it was still I used in the class to teach one particular topic.

While going through the blogs of our friends about integration of ICT in classroom teaching and learning I came across many advantages of using ICT to teach our children. So I thought why not I will give a try with my video tutorial after competing.
When I was assigned with the topic “The Concept of Zero” to make video tutorial from our tutor I skipped that topic thinking that I will explore my teaching using my video tutorial.
After much struggle, I could make a simple video tutorial on the topic “The Concept of Zero” from PP mathematics. I was very eager to show it to my PP kids to teach the concept of zero.
Before the lesson, I explained the objectives and told them that I am going to teach them through my laptop. In a group, I showed the video tutorial as in the picture below. I told them to listen and watch carefully. They were so excited to see me in the video.

The class was silent until the end of my tutoring session. I repeatedly showed them, since the video was short and have enough time.

After they finished watching the video tutorial I let them do some activity. I was surprised to see that all the children did it very well. While doing the activity I could see them sharing about the pictures seen in the tutorial.

*Work done by the students after watching the video tutorials.

Lastly, children of this generation love to learn more by watching than just listening to us. So I felt that if we have enough time and expert in making video tutorial we can make video tutorial for some topics and teach them through video. There will be more advantages of showing the video tutorials on other topics too.

USED ICT IN TEACHING HOW TO DRAW 3-D SHAPES.

In my first post I have mentioned about the advantages of using ICT in our teaching and learning processes. Yes! It has good advantages specially with small kids. In one of my lesson with Pre Primary students I was teaching them how to draw 3-D shapes like cone, cylinder, sphere and rectangular prism. I was having a tough time teaching them how to draw especially the rectangular prism. Pre Primary children never understood when I taught them how to draw rectangular prism. I taught them on the board using chalk. I had a really tough time to teach them to draw 3 –D shapes.
I remembered ICT and I goggled it and found one video tutorial on how to draw 3-D shapes. I immediately downloaded the video. In my next class I showed them the tutorial video as shown below on how to draw 3-D shapes. I played the video repeatedly.

Later on I told the children to get ready with a pencil and a book to draw 3-D shapes by watching the tutorial video. After that I let children to draw 3-D shapes. To my surprise I could see children drawing the 3 –D shapes much better than before. I was impressed with their work as shown below

Advantages of using ICT

ICT encourages student’s speaking and listening skills. It helps students to grasps new vocabulary. Students clarify thoughts, ideas and feelings by using ICT related gadges. Students go deeper into the unit of studies and can integrate and retain what they are learning in all areas when they have opportunities to create relevant and explore using ICT.

It encourages confidence and can take any risk in learning. When children are encouraged to explore the internet students are able to understand .we can easily get the various information through the use of ICT. It also makes learning easier and can explore any types of information.

It also helps students learn the content better and retain information, develop different skills, Children can express their feelings of joy or excitement, of begin scared or proud. It also helps students to think critically and to be creative.

ICT foster the experience and helps to explore their environments, near and far. Through that children make sense of the world around them, expresses their thought and feelings, also foster flexible and divergent thinking, it provides opportunities for children to meet and solve problems
